Spiders are scarey. They make their intricate webs everywhere! One egg sac can unleash hundreds of babies creating an infestation! They skitter around on eight legs and haunt the darkest corners of your home!
Most spiders prefer living outdoors, but all too often, they find their way indoors in search of food or shelter. Once inside, they prefer quiet, undisturbed areas in your home, such as closets, garages, basements, attics and other damp areas of your home. They can also be found in subfloor air-vents, in attics, and upper corners of rooms. They will hide in darkened areas, cracks, and other retreats which they construct out of silk. Their webbing supports their weight easily as spider silk is stronger than steel! They are common household pests which spin webs all over your home. Most spiders are associated with moisture found in kitchens and bathrooms. Reducing clutter in your home makes these areas less attractive to spiders.
The Common House Spider is usually the spider most found indoors. This spider randomly selects its web locations and creates a tangled web. They live in or near their web and wait for food to come to them . They generally have poor eyesight and rely on sensing vibrations in their web to detect their prey. The web is abandoned if it does not yield any prey. For this reason, multiple new spider webs can be found throughout your home creating a nuisance for you.
Two spiders that can cause serious harm when disturbed are the Black Widow Spider and the Brown Recluse Spider. Black Widow Spiders are most recognized for the red hourglass shape under their abdomen. Their bite can sometimes feel like a little pinprick. After 30 to 40 minutes, the area of the bite will swell and hurt. Other symptoms include weakness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, headache and feeling achy. The Brown Recluse Spider has a dark brown violin marking on its back. Their bite is usually painless until three to eight hours later, when it may become red, swollen and tender. An ulcerous sore may develop from one half to ten inches in diameter. Healing requires a month or longer and a deep scar may be left. PRETTY SCAREY! Prompt medical attention is needed when a bite occurs from a Black Widow or Brown Recluse Spider.
