Morris County Clothes Moth Treatment

Moths like living in cracks on the walls in your home. Light is another factor that will affect moths greatly. If your house is not well lit, moths will be attracted to dark places such as basements, attics, and closets. They avoid light. Moths are also positively phototactic. They seem charmed by your porch light, headlights, campfire, or occasional lamps in your home, even if it leads to their untimely demise. Some species feed on flower nectar of flowering house plants that you may have in your home. They can also enter your home through products that are already infested such as fabrics or foodstuffs that are bought. Most homeowners encounter moths that are either feeding on stored pantry items or fabrics.

CLOTHES MOTHS are most famous for ruining wool clothing. The most common of the Clothes Moth is the Webbing Clothes Moth. Their habits are different from most moths as they are rarely seen flying around lights at night. Their Moth Larva, not the adults, are responsible for damage. They are attracted to silk, hair, felt, fur and feathers. Clothes Moths can be found in folds of fabric, and hiding in dark corners. They like to consume sweater, coats, blankets, carpets, decorative pieces, pillow, toys, stuff animals and comforters. They can infest a home long before you notice their population exists and substantial damage can occur to your clothing and furnishings because of this.

INFESTATION SIGNS

Indoors Moths are detected by the adults flying about a room or resting on surfaces. If adults are present, so is their larva. Fabric-eating moths are detected when damage to fabrics is discovered. Webbing, cocoons, and droppings is evidence of an infestation. Their pupae may also be seen in corners of cabinets, drawers, or walls.

The adult female Webbing Clothes Moth can mate and lay eggs during the same day they emerge from the cocoon. Adults live 15 to 30 days. In colder months, this time is extended. Adult webbing clothes moths may be found at any time of the year and are more abundant in the summer months. They can develop quite well in heated buildings in this winter, such as your home. The presence of adults does not mean that larvae are in the same area. The adults may have already laid eggs in some other room of your structure.

When searching for clothes moths, larvae will usually be found in dark clothes closets, on furs, lint, woolens, hair padding, carpeting or such materials in storage. They can be found in edges of carpeting, in and under upholstered furniture, in collections of animal hair, and in air ducts. Articles of wool clothing, old furniture and rugs that have been stored and neglected should be checked for infestation. Old Wasps nests and accumulation of animal hair in heating ducts, and in hard to clean corners can also be a place for these pests to survive. Cast skins can be more numerous than larvae. A good flashlight, nail file or small spatula can be used to detect larvae in all of these areas. A serious infestation needs the attention of a Pest Management Professional (PMP) to eradicate the problem.
