The Indian Meal Moth is a very important and destructive pest. The feeding habit of these pests makes it one of the most common pests of stored food. Their larvae feed on grain and grain products, dried fruit, seeds, crackers, nuts, powdered milk, chocolate, candies, dried peppers, bird seeds, dry dog or cat food, whole wheat or graham flour, cornmeal, dried roots, dried flowers, sunflower seeds, herbs, and beans. Household infestations are often linked to large quantities of dry pet food or birdseed that are kept in large quantities in unattended locations. These infestations may remain unnoticed for a long period. The first indication of this insect in the house are pinkish white caterpillars crawling across the wall or ceiling or over counter tops. Another sign of these pests are a few brownish moths flying in an irregular pattern in the kitchen or adjoining room a few hours after sunset.

The female moth begins to lay eggs about 3 days after becoming an adult. She may deposit 200-300 eggs over 1-18 days. Eggs are laid singly or in groups, directly on food, and hatch in 7 – 8 days. The Indian Meal Moth can penetrate packaging material or even a polythene film. For these reasons, it does not take long to get a sizable  infestation  that  destroys  large quantities of  food.

Good sanitation and proper storage of dry goods is the best prevention and control for Indian Meal Moth infestations. All infested foods must be discarded prior to treatment. Give special attention to cracks and crevices in cabinets and how your dry food goods are stored. Shelves should be covered with clean shelf paper. Dry food goods should be stored in plastic air-tight containers.
