Flying Squirrels: THE HOUSE GUEST YOU DON’T WANT!

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS AND COLD WEATHER BRINGS NEW SOUNDS OF LITTLE FOOTSTEPS OR SCAMPERING ON YOUR ROOF AND ULTIMATELY IN YOUR ATTIC!

A colony of Flying Squirrels have likely come to seek refuge in your cozy home. These squirrels are nocturnal, tiny in size, compared to the Grey Squirrel, and weigh only a few ounces. They cause a great day of noise and destruction if they find entry into your structure and set up home for the winter months. Flying Squirrels live in large colonies moving their dens from trees in the summertime to warmer places – such – as your attic in the colder months. These squirrels have loose folds of skin between their front and hind legs and use their tail as a rudder. This enables them to glide through the air up to 150 feet, hence, the name “Flying Squirrel”. They are also great climbers and are able to scale buildings or a structure with ease. Breeding occurs in February, March and in the summer. By the time cold weather sets in, they can be looking for a warm place to set up house.

Flying Squirrels are small and can enter a structure thru a one-inch diameter space thru avoids in your homes’ roof line, chimney cap or fascia boards. They have sharp teeth and are known to chew through electrical wires causing a serious fire hazard. Their urine and droppings leave behind bio-hazardous waste in your attic and insulation.

In the Exclusion Process, all entry and exits points of your structure are carefully accessed. The flying squirrels are excluded from your property thru special man-made traps that are set up in strategic exit and entry gaps. The squirrels will leave your structure when looking for a food source or return when they have found food. These traps will allow the rodent to exit the structure only. Once the Flying Squirrels are excluded from your property, extreme care is taken to seal all entry points to ensure the squirrels will not re-enter and return.

Deodorization, decontamination and clean up of attic space or any effected area of your home is essential when urine and droppings cause odor problems and damage. These effected areas are treated with an enzyme-based decontaminating agent which neutralizes the odors and pheromones the animals leave behind. This is important to do as these animals will leave their scent behind which will attract and lead in new animals.
