SCHOOL’S OUT!

So Don’t Get “SCHOOLED” by SUMMER PESTS!

April showers have brought May flowers and Summer is officially here! These showers along with hot weather have more than just flowers popping up all over the place. Carpenter Bees, Carpenter Ants, Swarming Termites, and Stink Bugs are on the rise causing a major problem for homeowners.

Stink bugs are emerging from winter hiding spots in your home. These stinky pests can even hitch a ride on boxes and even in your grocery bags! Stink Bugs can cause damage to fabric, clothing and furniture with their droppings. They emit a strong odor when disturbed, frightened or squished. The best time to treat for Stink bugs is late August and September to ensure these pests don’t re-enter your home, causing a major infestation this fall.

Carpenter Bees are causing a dive-bombing nuisance to homeowners this summer. They can cause serious damage as they bore holes in wood. Fascia boards, fences, shingles, decks, jungle gyms and even wooden lawn furniture are prime areas in which they create a nest for their eggs or larvae. The males are more aggressive and actively protect their nests. They will return year after year to the same locations to bore into wood and cause serious damage to your home. Don’t ignore their dive-bombing buzzings!

Carpenter Antsare wood destroying pests that enter your home while searching for food, moisture, and shelter. They can crawl up your foundation and find an entry point. They can also drop from tree branches onto your roof, cross utility wires that lead to your home, enter on firewood brought into your home or simply just crawl in thru your front door! Swarmers emerge from around baseboards, window casings or vents in the spring or summertime. If you see more then 20, it is an indication of a large colony. If you hear crunching sounds, it may be rustling from their nests built in wood or in the wall or ceiling voids of your home. A true sign of an infestation are trails of sawdust established in wood which leads back to the nest. Carpenter Ants tunnel thru wood to create their nests, creating “galleries” which weaken and seriously damage wood structures of your home.

Subterranean Termites swarm during the spring and summer months, typically on a warm day with calm winds after a rainfall. If you find a pile of what appears to be insect wings in a section of your home, you might have a termite colony nearby. They will shed their wings once they’ve settled on a new place to colonize. The most obvious sign of termites are termite mud tubes on basement, garage or exterior walls or floors of your home. These mud tubes provide moisture while they are searching for food. You may also see mud build-up around the exterior of your home, which is another tell-tale sign. Termites also produce wood-colored droppings called frass as they eat their way through infested wood. Softening wood and wood flooring that may have cracks, crevices, or dips may be a sign of termite infestation. Wood that begins to fall apart, flake, or turn to dust should be inspected and investigated. Hollow wood may also be a sign that termites are eating your home from the INSIDE OUT! TERMITES act quickly, so you should too!
